The risk of unusual blood cholesterol levels increases when too many or too few thyroids are produced. In the neck thyroid gland is located, and it makes specific hormones. The two main hormones it produces are triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4). These hormones enter the bloodstream and have used throughout the body. The most active form of thyroid hormone is T3, and the body utilizes it in its original state. T4 can also be converted into active T3 by body enzymes.
Thyroid hormones help regulate brain development in children, body temperature, metabolism, growth and development, the function of the heart, brain, muscle, and other organs. An overactive thyroid is less common. Around 1.2% of people in the US have an overactive thyroid. An overactive thyroid can cause diarrhea, difficulty sleeping, fatigue, increased sensitivity to heat, mood changes, muscle weakness, nervousness or irritability, rapid heartbeat, shaky hands, and weight loss.

When too much cholesterol builds up in the arteries, it can cause a lot of health problems. By attaching to protein, the cholesterol travels in the body. There are two kinds of cholesterol HDL and LDL. HDL is known as good cholesterol because it helps the body get rid of cholesterol from the blood. T3 helps the liver process and remove excess cholesterol from the body. The liver cannot process cholesterol when enough thyroid hormones are not produced enough by the body. An underactive thyroid means less LDL is removed from the blood. With the supplementation of thyroid hormones, a person can manage their cholesterol levels. An overactive thyroid cause low levels of cholesterol in the blood. Low cholesterol in the blood can cause adverse health conditions. Complications caused by low cholesterol are too less as compared to high cholesterol.
